Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms: whose deadline has passed, and who has until 2030?

Alarm installation duties take effect in stages. Differences between existing homes, new premises and rooms used for accommodation services.

Headlines about mandatory domestic alarms often mention 2030. That date does not apply to every property: some requirements took effect earlier. Before a renovation or handover, establish the premises' use and when they first entered service.

Three situations, different deadlines

Poland's State Fire Service headquarters highlights the following distinctions. State Fire Service

Situation Deadline stated by the fire service
Existing residential premises covered by the transition period 1 January 2030
Existing rooms and residential units providing accommodation services covered by the rules 30 June 2026
New properties covered by the requirement On commencement of use

Transition periods refer to use on the regulation's effective date, 23 December 2024. This article is current as of 30 October 2026, so the deadline for the specified existing accommodation rooms has already passed.

Smoke and carbon monoxide are separate issues

The regulation provides for smoke alarms in residential premises and certain accommodation rooms. Exceptions include protection by a fire alarm system or a fixed automatic extinguishing installation. The CO alarm requirement concerns specified rooms where fuel is burned. Journal of Laws / ELI

The latter obligation excludes combustion in a sealed-combustion appliance and in a gas cooking appliance. These are exceptions to a particular legal requirement. They do not mean an appliance replaces other safety measures, or that every home with gas is subject to identical rules. Journal of Laws / ELI

What should remain after installation

The rules refer to manufacturers' instructions for installation, maintenance and use of standalone alarms. Journal of Laws / ELI A universal recommendation for a single wall position across all models is therefore insufficient.

As part of the service, give customers the device designation, instructions, installation date and testing information. If equipment has a specified service life or component replacement interval, owners should know where to check those dates.

During renovation, this is a small but useful coordination point for the owner, electrician and heating installer. Discuss it before finishing work, while requirements can still be included in the equipment plan. A deferred legal deadline does not prevent earlier use of an appropriate solution.
